Pregnancy can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time moms who aren’t sure how their bodies will change while growing their little one. Becoming a mother for the first time is an exciting journey, but it can also come with surprises that no one really talks about. Below are a few things I personally experienced during pregnancy that caught me off guard and how I handled them.
One thing no one ever warned me about was spider veins! One day I woke up and suddenly noticed these blue lines running up and down the back of my thighs. Spider veins can appear during pregnancy because your body is circulating more blood than usual. While they may not look the prettiest, the good news is that they’re usually temporary and often fade after pregnancy. Experiences like this are common for first-time moms, even though they’re rarely talked about beforehand.
Another surprise for me was the change in my sex drive. During pregnancy, hormones fluctuate constantly, so it’s completely normal for your libido to either increase or decrease. It’s also pretty common for you or your partner to feel unsure about intimacy later in pregnancy. The best advice I can give is to go with the flow and listen to your body. Every pregnancy is different, and many first-time moms find that their comfort levels change throughout each trimester.
Lastly, something many women don’t realize is that you can start lactating before your baby is even born. Your breasts go through many changes during pregnancy. Early on they can be sore and very sensitive, and as the months go by they often grow quickly. Before your milk fully comes in, your body produces colostrum, which is the nutrient-rich first milk your baby will receive. Sometimes this can begin leaking before birth, and while it may feel surprising, it’s completely normal as your body prepares to feed your baby.
Many of the things that happen during pregnancy can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time moms, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Don’t hesitate to ask your mom, family members, friends, or your doctor any questions you might have. Most women have gone through this journey at some point, and there truly are no embarrassing or off-limits questions when it comes to pregnancy and motherhood.
