How to Establish a Newborn Sleep Schedule: Tips for Healthy Sleep Routines

Believe it or not, you’ll want to begin guiding your newborn toward a sleep routine fairly soon after birth, as it can help support healthy sleep now and for years to come—but not too soon. The first couple of months should be focused on getting to know each other, feeding, cuddling, and adjusting to life together. Around the three-month mark, an infant’s internal clock usually becomes more predictable. This is often the best time to begin introducing a more consistent sleep schedule.

Once you start noticing patterns in when your baby becomes sleepy, begin there. Try laying your baby down when they are drowsy but not fully asleep. This is important because it helps them learn how to fall asleep on their own. Pay close attention to your baby’s cues and begin establishing a simple routine that leads up to their natural sleep times.

In the beginning, flexibility is key. However, try to follow the same pre-sleep routine each time before laying your baby down. If your baby wakes during the night or during a nap, avoid rushing in right away. At this stage, many babies can begin learning to self-soothe. If your baby continues to fuss, it’s okay to go in and comfort them without immediately picking them up.

As with all things involving babies, nothing is completely predictable. Finding what works best for you and your baby may take some time. Do your best to stay consistent with your routine while allowing room for adjustment along the way.

Establishing regular bedtime and nap routines helps lay the foundation for teaching your baby to fall asleep independently. And never hesitate to reach out to your doctor if you have questions about your baby’s sleep. They can provide helpful guidance if you run into challenges while establishing a schedule.

Most importantly, remember that every baby is different. What works for one family may look different for another. Still, creating consistent routines for sleep, feeding, and even playtime can provide a strong foundation for your growing child. Babies, toddlers, kids, and even teens tend to thrive on routines—it’s just that everyone’s routine looks a little different.
