Including Siblings in Your Maternity Session

A new baby brings a lot of exciting changes for growing families! For siblings, it’s a big change in their life as well. That’s why it’s important to involve siblings in your maternity photos. Including them, encourages excitement for the new baby, and allows you to capture your family in its current state! Below are a couple of my favorite ways to involve our child in your session.

First, including them will make your child feel special. Letting them know that you will need their help during the session will make a non-familiar setting a little easier as most little kids like to be “helpers”. The confidence they feel when you’ve made them a part of something that’s typically for grownups will go a long way. It’s also important to reward them for their involvement, this will make them feel part of welcoming the new baby! Plan to bring treats or even a new toy to make your maternity session extra special for them. Secondly, plan for a couple of solo portraits for your children. Portraits of just them will sure make them feel like stars! Plus, when you look back on those solo images, you won’t believe how grown-up your older children seem as you welcome a new baby to your family. 

Above all let your kids be kids! Candid photos genuinely show children’s personalities and spirits and these will be so fun to look back on. Involving your kids as much as possible with the arrival of the new baby is the key to helping them with the acceptance of this big change!
