When you start researching newborn photography most recommend baby to be 7-10 days old; any later, it can get tricky to predict a baby’s mood. But what happens when you find yourself 2 weeks or more past the birth of your baby? First, let me start by saying you are not alone. There are many contributing factors as to why you may have missed this window. Whether it be an extended stay in the hospital for your baby or you just didn’t have time to arrange it before your baby was born.
While it is not ideal to capture those sleeping posed shots, I am happy to say that it can be done! I just take a little different approach since the baby is more aware of their surroundings. I still ask mom and dad to bathe baby in a warm bath, come with a full belly and make sure to stimulate baby for at least 2-3 hours prior to your session time. Keeping babies awake will hopefully lead to them feeling sleepy once they arrive. My sessions are typically a full three hours as I work at your baby’s pace. I have a huge selection of props to use during the session that will provide a good variety in your gallery. I also will try all of my typical newborn poses but if the baby is not quite cooperating rest assured I do have tricks up my sleeve! Swaddle becomes our best friend, along with milk and lots of rocking. If the baby is not fussy and just awake that can be SO fun! I love photographing their big eyes and seeing their personality come through my lens when they are just kicking and gooing around!
So, don’t just think you have missed your window, oh well! I promise you are going to want these photos. Time ticks by so fast and when your son or daughter is having their babies, it is incredibly special to be able to reflect back on their newborn photos!
