Tips For Driving While Pregnant

When you’re expecting, it’s natural to want to protect your growing baby at all costs. While it may sound surprising, there are a few extra precautions to consider when it comes to driving while pregnant. As your body changes, taking a few simple safety steps can help keep both you and your baby comfortable and protected on the road.

First, pregnancy brings many physical changes, and growing a baby can take a toll on your body. Dizziness, fatigue, and general discomfort are common symptoms that can affect your ability to focus. Before driving while pregnant, take a moment to make sure you’re feeling alert and well enough to be on the road. If you’re planning a longer trip and don’t have someone traveling with you, try to take breaks along the way. Getting out of the car to stretch, walk around, and staying hydrated can make a big difference in how you feel.

Second, make sure your car is in proper working order. Being prepared is important for anyone on the road, but it’s especially helpful when driving while pregnant. Keep water, snacks, and a warm blanket in your car in case you experience traffic delays or a breakdown. It’s also a good idea to have a cell phone charger available. Having a basic first aid kit and emergency kit in your vehicle is always recommended, whether you’re pregnant or not.

Lastly, as your belly grows, buckling up can become a bit more challenging. If possible, being the passenger instead of the driver may feel more comfortable later in pregnancy. When driving, try to keep your breastbone about 10 inches away from the steering wheel to create space between you and the airbag if it deploys. Tilt the steering wheel toward your breastbone rather than your abdomen to help protect your belly. For your seatbelt, place the lap belt low across your upper thighs and hip bones, while the shoulder strap should rest between your breasts. Avoid placing the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.

Pregnancy doesn’t mean you have to stop living your life or running errands. Just remember to listen to your body and take extra care when traveling. If you’re feeling overly tired or unwell, it’s okay to stay home. Thankfully, many services today allow groceries, meals, and other essentials to be delivered right to your door. Prioritizing your safety and comfort during pregnancy is always the best choice.
