The number one question I am asked in every newborn portrait session is, “Any tips to comfort my baby?” My answer is to always swaddle!!! New parents are always amazed when I whip out my Swaddle Pro (Found on Etsy) and the baby instantly calms down. Most newborn babies love feeling so cozy and secure like they are back in the womb.
With so many swaddles on the market, it can be hard to decide which one is best. Basically, your baby just needs their arms together in a prayer pose to their chest and hands tucked under their chin. Legs to their tummy and wrapped tight so they cannot get loose. Not only will your baby be calmer, but it can help them and you sleep longer and behave better.
As a new mom, all of our time is focused on our new baby, learning, and adjusting to life with them on the outside. One thing we do not put much thought into is the foods we are eating while breastfeeding. If your baby seems cranky or upset often it may be because of a gassy tummy. Try to avoid green vegetables in their raw state. Gassy veggies that make you gassy can make baby gassy too. Also, avoid spicy foods as they are a gas culprit as well.
As you embark on your journey to parenthood with your new baby, learning to comfort them is #1 on all of our lists. Swaddling and paying attention to foods you eat while breastfeeding is my best advice. I promise by doing these two things will help you navigate this awesome adventure with your new bundle of joy! And hopefully less sleepless nights for all!
