You are settling into your 2nd trimester of pregnancy- now is the time to start thinking about planning for your maternity session! The first thing to decide is if you want an indoor or outdoor photo session. There are pros and cons to both. Outdoor, you are limited to the background of the location that you are at and also likely outfit changes. However; photographing in natural light and surroundings brings a classic vibe to your portraits.
For an indoor session, you will be able to select different gown looks. Your photographer should have a pretty extensive wardrobe for you to choose from and being indoors there is an ease to changing into lots of looks. Another benefit to being indoors is props! Whomever you select to photograph you will have props, florals, chairs, and boxes for you to pose on or with. The options are truly endless when it comes to designing a “set” to photograph indoors!
Now that brings us to where you find inspiration for your maternity session. Our very favorite place to go is Pinterest! You are able to search your style of photography looks and it will pull up numerous outfits and poses. You are also able to create boards that you can share with your photographer.
Another place to look that is unconventional is magazines, and I am not talking about maternity magazines, but ones like Vogue, Glamour, or even People Magazine! We love getting different and unique ideas on posing as well as attire to replicate in our client’s sessions. Not everyone’s styles are the same so tailoring your maternity session specific to your taste is key!
Lastly, Google is a never-ending rabbit hole of ideas to look for maternity session inspo! Our best advice is to really think about your and your partner’s styles, culture, and tastes prior to reaching out to a photographer. You want a photographer that is a good fit for you and can bring your vision to life! Also, please do not forget that this is YOUR session and your photographer is your guide. At the end of the day, we see most clients want classic, comfortable maternity portraits celebrating the mom’s amazingness of what her body can do! I promise you will look back on these portraits and relive all the feelings as to what it felt like to have a baby in your tummy!
