Tummy Time for Newborns: Why It’s Important and How to Start

Tummy Time for Newborns: Benefits and Tips for Getting Started

Have you ever wondered why tummy time for newborns is recommended so early? Many parents assume it might be too soon, but tummy time actually plays a very important role in your baby’s development.

One of the biggest benefits of tummy time for newborns is helping prevent flat spots on the back of your baby’s head. Even more importantly, tummy time strengthens your baby’s neck, shoulders, and upper body muscles. These muscles are essential for future milestones like sitting up, crawling, and eventually walking.

When to Start Tummy Time

You can begin tummy time for newborns once your baby’s umbilical cord stump has fallen off. In the beginning, keep sessions very short—about one minute at a time, a few times a day.

If your baby starts to fuss or cry, that’s completely normal. Simply take a break and try again later. The goal is to keep tummy time positive and gradual.

Making Tummy Time Comfortable

One of the easiest ways to introduce tummy time for newborns is by placing your baby on your chest while you’re lying down or reclining. This allows your baby to practice lifting their head while still feeling comforted by being close to you.

Newborns often prefer resting their heads to one side while on their tummy. Gently encouraging them to turn their head to the opposite side helps strengthen different neck muscles.

Adding Toys and Visual Stimulation

As your baby gets stronger, you can place high-contrast toys or cards in front of them during tummy time for newborns. These visual stimuli encourage babies to lift their heads and explore their surroundings.

Activity gyms or black-and-white toys are especially helpful because newborns are naturally drawn to high-contrast patterns.

Get Dad Involved

Tummy time doesn’t have to happen only on the floor. Another fun option is having dad hold the baby in a football hold on his forearm. This position still encourages head and neck movement while giving baby a new perspective.

Consistency Is Key

The more you practice tummy time for newborns, the stronger your baby will become. These early moments help build the muscle coordination needed for rolling over, crawling, sitting, and playing.

The best advice is to stay consistent and keep tummy time sessions short and frequent. Over time, your baby will grow stronger and begin to enjoy exploring the world from this new position.
